What to budget for a Kenyan Coast holiday
The costs to plan for — beyond the package price — and where you can save without missing out.

Rather than quoting prices that go out of date, this guide lists every cost to include so your budget is realistic. Ask us for current figures for your dates.
The big three
- Getting there: flights from Entebbe, a coach to Nairobi plus the SGR train, or a mix. This is often the biggest single cost.
- Accommodation: Value, Comfort or Premium — and the meal plan (bed and breakfast, half board or all-inclusive).
- Season: Christmas, New Year and school holidays cost more; the long rains cost less.
Costs people forget
- Marine park, national park and heritage site entry fees (set by the authorities and they change)
- Airport and station transfers if not included
- Drinks, snacks and meals outside your meal plan
- Excursions such as dhow trips or snorkelling
- Tips for guides, drivers and hotel staff
- Travel insurance
- Mobile data or a local SIM, and souvenirs
Ways to save
- Travel just outside peak dates.
- Take the coach and SGR train instead of flying.
- Choose half board and enjoy local restaurants for some meals.
- Share a villa with a group.
- Book early for school holidays.
Currency tips
Kenya uses the Kenya shilling (KES). M-Pesa and cards are widely accepted in hotels and malls; keep some cash for markets and tips. Exchange rates move, so we always state the currency and validity on your quote.
Facts in this guide were checked in October 2026. Entry rules, schedules and fees change — confirm with official sources and your airline before you travel.
