There are three main ways to travel from Uganda to Kenya’s main holiday areas. Here’s how they compare.

Flying from Entebbe

To Nairobi: about 1 hour 10 minutes. Kenya Airways runs daily flights, with onward connections to Mombasa and other Kenyan cities, and Uganda Airlines also flies the route.

To Mombasa: Uganda Airlines operates Entebbe–Mombasa flights of under two hours. Check the current days of operation when booking.

Best for: short breaks, families with young children, and anyone short on time.

Coach from Kampala

Overnight coaches run from Kampala to Nairobi via the Busia or Malaba border, taking around 13 hours depending on traffic and border queues. You leave the coach to clear exit and entry immigration.

Best for: budget travellers and groups with flexible time. Bring your ID or passport, some Kenya shillings and a warm layer for the night.

SGR train between Nairobi and Mombasa

Kenya’s Madaraka Express runs between Nairobi and Mombasa in roughly 5 to 6 hours, depending on the service, with stops including Voi for Tsavo East. It’s a relaxed way to combine Nairobi with the Coast.

Best for: Nairobi-and-Coast trips, families and anyone who enjoys the view — you may see wildlife from the window as you pass Tsavo.
